What Are The Halifax EMC Scholarships?

Slade-Ellen Scholarships

The Slade-Ellen Scholarships are (2) $375 scholarships awarded annually to high school seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Halifax Electric Membership Corporation.

Purpose

The Directors and Management of Halifax Electric Membership Corporation believe that the future of America is in the hands of today's youth. Development of tomorrow's leaders is achieved through educational opportunities today. To this end, these scholarships are provided.

Objective

To provide financial assistance that will make it possible for three well-rounded high school graduates with financial need to continue their education.

Who Is Eligible To Apply?

Current high school seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Halifax Electric Membership Corporation are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Each applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited North Carolina university or college, including junior, community, vocational, or technical colleges.

How To Apply

Students wishing to submit an application should contact their high school guidance counselor or the Enfield/Macon offices of Halifax EMC.

Completed applications must be postmarked and/or returned to Halifax EMC by April 1.

Selection Procedure

Selection is made by the Scholarship Committee of Halifax Electric Membership Corporation. Applicants must be willing to be interviewed by the committee, if necessary. Decisions made by this committee shall be final.

Selection is determined based on the following criteria:
  1. Need for financial assistance - 35%
  2. Scholastic Achievement - 35%
  3. Extra-Curricular Achievement/Activities - 30%

Runner-ups will be selected, in the event the recipient forfeits rights to the scholarship.

All applicants for the Halifax EMC Scholarships shall be considered on the above criteria without regard for race, age, color, religion, sex, national origin, or existence of a physical handicap.

Nash Community/Halifax Community College Scholarships

The Nash Community/Halifax Community College Scholarships are $500 scholarships awarded annually to a student enrolled at  Nash Community College or Halifax Community College.

Purpose

To recognize and promote academic achievement and excellence; to provide educational training beyond the high school level; and to provide educational opportunities for retraining for better job skills.

Requirements for the Scholarships

The student must:

  • Be 18 years old or older.
  • Live in a household served by Halifax EMC.
  • Enrolled for a minimum of six semester hours.
  • Attain and maintain a minimum grade-point average 2.5 (GPA).
  • Provide two letters of recommendation recognizing the applicant's qualities of character and leadership.
  • Provide a written statement of financial need.

Selection

The recipient is selected by the College Financial Aid Committee and/or Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will not discriminate for or against any student because of age, sex, ethnic origin, race religion, or disability.

Disbursement of Funds

The funds are sent directly to the colleges and are to be used for tuition, books, or fees. The annual scholarship of $500 is awarded in increments of $250 per semester for the Fall and Spring semesters.
